If you want full control over how the content is rendered, you can use 
the content object. I always point to this article, as it has been very 
useful to me:

I basically to all my templating via content objects, so I can control 
every character. Except the main content column, where it is very handy 
to have the flexibility of css_styled_content.

The fluid template approach suggested by Jo sounds interesting as well.

Not sure if your approach of "cleaning" csc will work, as there are 
dozens of snippets for that out there already, but they haven't worked 
too well for me.
