i also prefer the way with backend-layouts...
but i only dislike the nameing !!!
for me the backend-layouts selectbox is my normal "layout" selector
(because they chained to the frontend) and the old layout selectbox is
my additional "layout-variants" selector (maybe for color or
teaserswitching)
...and so i name these fields for my customers
