Something like this?

      5 = IMAGE
      5.file {
        import = uploads/media/       
        import.data = {field:uid}
        treatIdAsReference = 1
        import.listNum = 0   
      }

I'm getting the white square again so I think it's not finding the graphic :(


If I try to use this instead, then I get stairs graphic (default Typo3 graphic):
 5.file {
        import.field = media   
        import.data = {field:uid}
        treatIdAsReference = 1
        import.listNum = 0   
      }
