The collation is probably wrong in your database. You can check it with phpmyadmin.

Please check this Xavier's excellent tutorial of changing the collation:

It is in french, but I'm sure you can use it. The part you probably need is in the end: "Conversion d'une base de données existante"
And in nut shell: create a dump (and copy it for backup) -> change the char set -> re-import the db -> change the default char set

I'm not sure if the ts should be the same in 6.0, but check that part too.
