Neither really. It moves the template related logic (conditions/loops) 
inside the template and leaves typoscript for configuration and overlays.

It does need more memory, but I do not have exact numbers.
Maybe someone with more knowledge about this can give you exact numbers.

Fluidtemplates are really cool, because you can easily archive much with 
little learning. This is best suited for complex layout that depends on many 
conditions.

If you already have a ready (HTML+CSS+JS) layout to integrate, you will be 
much faster by using automaketemplate.
