I would upgrade step by step: 4.3 -> 4.4 -> 4.5 -> 4.6 -> 4.7
each latest version.
and always run the upgrade-wizard!!!

at 4.5:
look for DB-encoding and make sure to be completely UTF8
ext:sm_charsethelper + http://pi-phi.de/293.html

activate deprecated-log and run the site for a while.
look into deprecated-log and correct all errors (may need 
extension-updates which must be done anyway)

you may stop here (LTS!) as after 4.5 major changes are included (e.g. 
removal of deprecated functions from core).

if you continue:
at 4.6 also check deprecated-log

and don't forget the update of installed extensions and languages!

mainly yes, it may occur a lot of PHP-warnings
