Mhh...maybe. I used Unarchiver, but it did not prompt me for encoding (I 
guess the correct should have been utf-8something). I don't use Stuffit, 
but well...good to know. Thank you for the tip and best regards!

I "solved" it by using Stuffit Expander instead, which does not require any selection, and the unstuffed code had no errors, so I tried applying it again. My site is now working fine with TYPO3 v4.4.8, v4.5.2 and v.4.5.3
