I had the same issue yesterday on my local dev computer. As soon as I 
switched to gm (instead of im6) I got the same gif issue. PNGs work fine.

I have Fedora 14 64bit with latest updates for PHP and gm/im6.
gm: 1.3.12
im6: 6.6.4.1
php: 5.3.5
