IMHO this is also cms issue. If you have multiple static columns like 
the default LEFT NORMAL and RIGHT, then you of course set them up with 
css. But if you want to place within one column the content elements in 
horizontal row, you need special approach, for example plugin. I use 
kb_nescefe and/or multicolumn, these are very flexible and easy to use - 
but there are others also.
