I briefly read the manual of kb_nescefe and Bernard mentions that it is 
similar to the way Flexible Content Elements (FCE) of TemplaVoilà can 
work. Also most of the functionality of multicolumn can be done with FCEs.

If you really need this it could be a reason enough to use TemplaVoilà 
in your site.

It is not very wise to put too many features in the core if they are 
affecting the frontend rendering also. Not everybody needs it and it 
will add to the processing needed for rendering a page.
You may also have noticed that some features have been outsourced to 
(system) extensions to make it possible to uninstall them if you don't 
need them (versioning, workspaces).
