As far as I know the "|" character is merely a reminiscence of the old days when browsers like Netscape were not able to handle contiguous links like <a href=link1"><a href="link2"> and nowadays can be considered superfluous and seems like a kind of "poor" ascii art

My opinion: it should be better to separate the links using  an unsorted list <ul><li>...etc  and rely on CSS (border-right:1px solid #000 or something like that) to perform visual separation between them.
