On TYPO3 4.5 Powermail supports the new mail API (SwiftMailer). In the 
Install Tool you can configure that the new mail API uses SMTP to send 
out mails.

 From TER upload comments of Powermail:
"1.6.1: Bugfixes, Swiftmailer integration, see all changes at ..."
