[TYPO3-english] using COMMENTS_COUNT in Commenting system's COMMENT_LIST part

hi,
 
i am trying to add the number of comments to the header of the
COMMENT_LIST subpart of the template. obviously i would love to start
off my comment listing with a header (<h3>) "Kommentare (18). 
 
i found a fix that would work in tt_news, as you could add
TX_COMMENTS_COUNT to the single view of the tt_news template. but in my
case this is not handy, as the number should only appear if the
commenting system is used on that page.
 
any ideas?
