[TYPO3-english] Typo3 4.4 Error Reason: File "index.php" was not found (2)!

Hi - just did a completely new install from
introductionpackage-4.4.2.zip

Went into admin and clicked on NewsAdmin - I get:

Error Reason: File "index.php" was not found (2)!

in the 3rd column.

This is probably the 4th time I've installed this version. On the first
time, I didn't notice the error until I added the mailform plugin and
tried to go to it's admin area - I got the same error.

Typo3 was unzipped in the web root.

I've searched and found a few references to this error, but they had to
do with paths and I've checked the conf files and the paths all seem to
be the corrected version.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm setting this up for my daughter's
school's volunteers and I thought Typo3 would be perfect so they
wouldn't have to learn a complicated back-end to change content.
