Yes, the thumbnail image of the pdf document is generated in the 
typo3temp/pics/ directory. The image resolution here reflects the size I 
have set in the backend.

I have tried with other images (jpg, gif) and yes they work fine

This could be interesting, but I don't know if its related (since the 
thumbnail is generated anyway and i have no idea what the resize has to 
do with ghostscript)

Fonts with Subtype = /TrueType should be embedded. But Symbol is not 
embedded. This file had errors that were repaired or ignored.

Having looked through my localconf I could not find anything.
