Just accidentally found one more option, when browsing TSref, so let it be 
in this topic for further requesters:

In a CONFIG section you may find:
USERNAME_substToken (string) -  The is the token used on the page, which 
should be substituted with the current username IF a front-end user is 
logged in! If no login, the substitution will not happen.
Default value: <!--###USERNAME###-->

Quite nice TYPO3 feature, since such a token may even be placed inside a 
content element by website editors.
