[TYPO3-english] Realurl OK, but config.BaseUrl doesn't work ... Can't figure out why

I was using danp_realurlconfigurator extension before and all was working
more or less fine but now i switched to cbrealurl.

I made sure to uninstall and cleanup after uninstalling before installing
and configuring for cbrealurl.

I set up the base url via the Constant Editor > Basic and this puts the
following line in the constants of my root template as expected:

config.baseURL = http://mydomain.com/sites/

The problem however is that when i call up http://mydomain.com/sites/ all my
links are based on mydomain.com and not mydomain.com/sites/ so everything is
broken.

Realurl seems to work fine otherise since i can call up all pages of the
site with a speaking url (http://mydomain.com/services/webdesign.html) and
it finds the page.

What am i missing ?

I've been at this for an hour now and can't figure out why the base url is
not working ..
