It would never be necessary with a fork. As both Georg and Joey writes, 
a lot of TYPO3 companies, developers and customers will stick with TYPO3 
4.x for lot of years - probably at least 4 - 5 and maybe more years. In 
4 - 5 years the world of technology has made other big changes to.

TYPO3 5.0 is a totally new approach - mostly because technologies and 
concept changes. Remember the base of TYPO3 is more than 10 years old.

Probably there will be upgrade paths also to v5, and as most of us, you 
will start with v5 when you find it mature and good enough for your use.

But almost all software has these kind of changes, where backward 
compability is broken to a certain degree, but some like Drupal and 
Joomla does it nearly all the time.
