BTW: The next version of TYPO3 will be 4.4, followed by 4.5 and so on.
These are major releases, even though the change is going to happen only
after the dot.
The developers of the 5.x branch were just too optimistic about their
release cycles, which is why 5.x is blocked as a version number for a major
relase for about 4 years now.

With this in mind you could say that 5.x is not the next version of TYPO3
but a completely different product branch, that will be in a way related and
compatible to the 4.x branch but break a lot of 4.x concepts as well.
