[TYPO3-english] Typo3 4.2.6 upgrade?

I started my new project using another project based on typo3 version 4.2.6.

Current version is 4.4, is it realy recommended to upgrade to 4.4 or would
it be better to go to 4.3 (only)?

Is there somewhere step-by-step explanation to upgrade?
Are several extensions known to have trouble with version 4.3 or 4.4?

BTW, I need to upgrade at least to 4.2.6 because I tried with no success to
get DAM working? Is that extension still working with 4.3 and/or 4.3?
