[TYPO3-english] Locks? What is the concept? and why are they hurting my site?

I will try this. But I got no clue how to apply a patch.

I guess I need connect to the server with a command line tool.

And execute this command:

patch -p0 class.t3lib_lock.php < t3lib_class.t3lib_lock.php.patch

I usually handle files via ftp. So how do I establish a connection with 
a command line tool?
