I am using it on a TYPO3 4.2.6 installation in ts mode with both page
and content templates but I previously tested it on another 4.2
installation using the html file mode with success.  It even works
well for non-admins in custom workspaces.

The documentation for the html mode is accurate (or at least accurate
enough that I was able to use it) and the extension even includes .t3d
files you can import for an example or as a basis to get started.  I
found that both were for html mode, though they were marked as being
two different modes.

I believe a template selector is the easiest and safest solution
assuming your primary goal is to let authors create pages with
different templates you predefine.
