Ahh, I see!

Don't do two things at a time!

Use the version you run on the old machine (and not some other source, like 
4.2.1 as you mentioned) to make the copy for the new machine.
What to do:
Use an empty folder on the new machine and copy your complete(!) 
installation in this folder (that means copy fileadmin/, typo3/, t3lib/, 
index.php and so on).
Then you have the old source and all of your files in place.

After that you have to import the database; mysql is fine here as well.

If this works, you can then try an update; but make a backup first...
That way you don't have any problems you might get if you update to 4.2.x.
