[TYPO3] thumbnail scaling problem

hello,

i am using typo3 4.2.1 and have a problem with frontend thumbnail scaling.

i use an image content element and set width to 160 and height to 120. as
long as the images have an aspect ratio of 4:3 or 3:4 everything is fine.
the thumbnails will be 160x120 or 90x120.

but with an image aspect ratio of 2:1 for example, the thumbnail will be
240:120. the thumbnails should never exceed 160x120 though!

does anyone have an idea how to solve this?
