Yes. But there is also xajax, which may be more simple from PHP. But i would prefer Prototype because it comes with TYPO3. I am not a fan of Prototype but for AJAX it is fine.

It is not very different from FE. I know that tt_news uses xajax to load categories for news form. You can check that. For FE/Prototype example you can see ratings extension.
