[TYPO3] Do I need the Site Crawler to get Indexed Search to work?

No, pages are indexed as you 'crawling' them manually - so, just
visiting next pages. REMEMBER that pages are ONLY indexed when no backend
user is looged.

Of course you have to enable indexing in main template first:

  config.index_enable = 1
