[TYPO3] fresh 4.2 installation BE password not accepted

Morning list!

I've got a fresh TYPO3 4.2 installation on RHEL5 but any login attempt 
to the backend fails.
In sys_log the event is captured as 'login attempt from.... password not 
accepted'.
I tried IE7, FF2 and FF3 with no success. I was wondering whether is has 
something to do with the javascript md5 encryption of the password prior 
to login.
Any help is highly appreciated!
