[TYPO3] RealUrl - multisite links and baseurl / suffix

How are you making the cross-domain links work so that the other
domain name is shown in the link?

I use config.content_from_pid_allowOutsideDomain = 1, but that seems
to be leaving out the RealURL portion and uses the old index.php with
parameters. Then again, the system this problem is on it TYPO3 3.8.
Does the newer TYPO3 installations not have this problem?
