[TYPO3] tt_news catmenu how to hide 1st level

hei,

i am using the same typo3 installation for several sites, and would love 
to have independent tt_news category menues.

i created a category tree in which one first level category belongs to 
each site therefore i can properly separate the categories of the sites.

in my catmenu i need to list the 2nd level categories only, so i do not 
want to show the 1st level at all. i have browsed the manual for a hint 
but cannot find any.

do you know how i can achieve this?
