[TYPO3] syntax of typoscript

Hi all

 

I am really quite illiterate with typoscript, and find the references very
difficult to interpret, so please excuse this silly question.

 

I am trying to render the navigation title of the page I am on . I took this
example from TS By example .

 

page.10 = TEXT

page.10.data = field:title

 

and came up with 

 

lib.menuHeader = TEXT

lib.menuHeader.data = field: nav_title

 

But neither of them work.

 

If I switch to this..

 

lib.menuHeader = TEXT

lib.menuHeader.data = leveltitle:-1

 

I get the normal title rendering properly, except that it is a longer title,
and I want the shorter one used in the navigation, which in my pages table
is field nav_title.

 

Why won't the first one work?
