The issue has been resolved with a suggestion from Sander van Gelderen, leaving
the images untouched:

######### snip #################

lib.menucont2 = HMENU
lib.menucont2.1 = GMENU
lib.menucont2.1.NO {

  altImgResource.import = uploads/media/
  altImgResource.import.field = media
  altImgResource.import.listNum = 0

  wrap = <div class="menuitem2">|</div>
  ATagTitle.field = subtitle
}

######### snap #################
