[TYPO3] Problem with typo3temp cleanup

Hi people,

I'm trying to clean up our typo3temp directory without success.
There are currently so many files in the directory that it is starting 
to influence server performance.

What I've been trying to do is to just empty the directory and letting 
typo3 regenerate the contents but I've been unable to get it to do that.
Is there a way to trigger typo3 into regenerating typo3 files when they 
are requested?
