[TYPO3] left-click menu fails in BE

Hi list,

In one of my 4.1.5 installs I cannot left-click on BE icons anymore. 
Firebug shows me this problem:

t3ajax has no properties
showClickmenu_ajax(undefined)alt_file_navframe... (line 113)
onreadystatechange()alt_file_navframe... (line 105)
[Break on this error] if (t3ajax.getElementsByTagName("data")[0]) {

On another 4.1.5 install, same server, same (versions of) extensions this 
is working fine.
I de-installed, deleted and re-installed xajax, cleaned temp_cached 
files,... But the problem persists.

This problem was already mentioned on bugs.typo3.org but some 2 years ago 
and with older TYPO3 versions. Doesn't help much I think.

Does anyone have experience with this and / or suggestions as to how I 
could get my BE working again?
