I tried this yesterday and indeed, I could update one site to Typo3 4.2.3

These were my steps:
- Update extensions if possible
- Install tool: Update Wizard
- local.conf: removed this line:
$TYPO3_CONF_VARS["SYS"]["compat_version"] = '4.1';
Because there was also this line:
$TYPO3_CONF_VARS['SYS']['compat_version'] = '4.2';
- Removed all temp_CACHED* files
- DB check: update reference index

Now I have to go through these steps for all my sites. This will take 
some time.
