[TYPO3] indexing is not working.

I found indexed search wasn't working, it kept returning 0 results. I  
thought it was the way I set up the search until I looked at the indexing  
being generated.

Under tools - indexing, under general statistics, this is what it shows:

index_phash:   		0
index_words:   		0
index_rel:   		0
index_grlist:   		0
index_section:   		0
index_fulltext:   		0

0 indexing! Absolutely none.

I've searched all over the internet in vain for some way to turn indexing  
on. It seems it should be on by default but it's not - what am I missing  
here?
