What you need is the so-called "free" translation mode. I can't  
remember the settings off the top of my head (I never use it myself),  
but you should find the appropriate settings in the Localisation  
Guide (http://typo3.org/documentation/document-library/core- 
documentation/doc_l10nguide/current/).
