Well, I used free phpEclipse for a long time but finally got Zend
Studio. It seems to be the only thing that let debug php files properly
and even follow symbolic links (phpEd does not). I use it for less than
a month and it already saved me hours of work. I think it is completely
worth its money. I am not rich but this was a good investment.

debug() and other methods are not so effective, especially if you have
to go through a series of core calls.
