I know dell sells some crap SATA configurations.
I am sure you are going for a SAS configuration in raid1?

For the filesystem you can think of installing XFS with LVM,
if you know for sure that you have plenty enough HD space then you  
can just
go for XFS. XFS seems to be faster then EXT3.
