[TYPO3] FE User login not working

Also, the sysFolder and page with login are sibling pages in the page tree.
I don't know if that matters, but it's true.

OK, so I'm struggling to learn the details of FE user logins. I have a page
that contains a login content element. I have a sysFolder that has a fe user
and fe usergroup. The page that contains the login has the sysFolder set as
it's general record storage page id. I enter the username and password in
the login box - no login occurs. I can tell because I have the login box set
to "hide at login". What gives?
