[TYPO3] htmlArea RTE and Classes

Just my opnion but its probably because you could have different classes 
for headlines, and paragraphs then for tables or images or anchors.

and then setting a defiitive list of what classes are allowed then makes 
stripping out allt he crap calles MS word uses gets a bit better.
