That was it!!!! There was nothing wrong with my code: it's a bug! Now,
how are we mere mortals supposed to know that? I read quite a few docs
before subscribing to this list yesterday, but I didn't find any answers
on the net. There should be a footnote on the typo3 tutorials about this
issue.

Everything is working now. I can go back to my original design now (a go
live template). I hope that works...
