There is a lot of documentation about extension development:

But I suggest you the TYPO3 Book:
http://typo3.org/documentation/typo3-book/
Here you can find a lot of simple examples and some more complex
example. I think this is one of the two best ways to understand
extensions programming.

The second way is to study an existing extension , the best one is
tt_news.

Finally, if you use kickstarter, you can ask it to create a dummy
frontend code which is a goob starting point for your development.
