[TYPO3] imagecols default problem

Hi all,

I'm having a problem with the 'cols' setting for img/imgtext content
types defaulting to 2.  I'm aware of the small bug affecting this
(http://bugs.typo3.org/view.php?id=4690) - I've fixed this manually, and
I have the following in my User TS:

TCAdefaults.tt_content.imagecols = 1

 - and yet... nothing.  Can anyone suggest why, or is there a way I can
effectively ignore or override the cols value?
