[TYPO3] multilanguage typoscript configuration

I have also been surprised that this isn't mentioned in the  
Localization Guide, but I left it in my multilingual sites and AFAICT  
it didn't break anything. I didn't try to remove it though. Looking  
at the TS it should be possible to remove it without breaking  
anything. But I don't know why such a setup was required at some  
point in time and not anymore. Maybe it is dependent on the TYPO3  
version.
