Firsts, sr_fe_user_register has two ways for user group self-management 
(hope, I am not wrong because I recall it all from memory):
- you can set TS property to specify user's initial group. He is 
included to this group when he registers
- it can be configured to present a choice for user where he wants to belong

I am not sure what do you mean by "rights". By default the only "rights" 
that FE user have is the ability to see different pages depending on 
their group list.

[I hate saying this without real life example but] sr_feuser_register 
manual should give you an idea.
