You were right: the manual was not up to date.

This is what I found out:

1)
plugin.tx_srfeuserregister_pi1.site.Name = MyDomain

ad 1) It should be:
plugin.tx_srfeuserregister_pi1.siteName = MyDomain

2) Haven't solved that one (the problem with the images)

3)
plugin.tx_srfeuserregister_pi1.allowUserGroupSelecion = 1
plugin.tx_srfeuserregister_pi1.allowUserGroupUpdate = 1
plugin.tx_srfeuserregister_pi1.allowMultipleUserGroupSelection = 1

ad 3) It should be:
plugin.tx_srfeuserregister_pi1.invite.allowUserGroupSelection = 1
plugin.tx_srfeuserregister_pi1.edit.allowUserGroupSelection = 1
plugin.tx_srfeuserregister_pi1.create.allowUserGroupSelection = 1
