Thanks for the explanation Dmitry.  I figured there would be a big 
performance hit if subpages were enabled too.

For our particular project, we're dealing with non-technical users who 
are very new to TYPO3, and we're probably better off with the 
performance issues from autoUpdatePathCache than trying to get them 
flush the caches manually.  I definitely see your point though.
