[TYPO3] Using right normal left columns

HI list,

can anyone point me in the right direction on how to use these columns 
in Typo3 for the 'Right' 'Normal' and 'Left' columns. I've tried to 
Google it but with no luck.

I'm a complete newbie to Typo3, so any help is muchly appreciated and if 
you could be very clear on where to put what in ext or TS config.

I'm using the tutorial from 2004 from Kasper as my base and I've got 
everything working from there fine.
