[TYPO3] Questions conserning XHTML and Typo3

I read the TSREF but because I couldn't find the answers there I
thought I could find help and suggestions here.

1.
I tried this with my template but it didn't do anything:

page.config.disableCharsetHeader = 1

3.
I now I can make Typo3 print the HTML 4.01 Doctype so I assume that
source code changes accordingly?

4.
Unfortunately I need more tips for this one.

And because these things are elementary I want to learn them :)
