Subject: [TYPO3] Options for hosting multiple sites

Hi there,

We will be rolling Typo3 v4.0 out to about 300 businesses each having their
own typo3 CMS site.

I have been doing research into hosting multiple sites with Typo3. I have
come up with the details below, but i do have some questions. I would be
very greatful if someone could add to the options and details below so we
can make a decision on the way to move forward.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Options 1
Have one installation of Typo3, and add sites through the back end, then
point all a records for the new sites to the root Typo3 folder. Typo3 then
handles all requests displaying content (BE and FE) dependant upon whihc
domain is used to access the system

Pros
Easily maintainable by a top level admin,
sites very easy to set up,
Only one installation of Typo3 used
grant access to sites fileadmin folder via ftp

Cons
Shared database

Questions...
Is there a way to export a single sites data, both through MySQL and through
Typo3? (if someone wanted to take their data to another installation?)

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Option 2
This option i have not been able to get working (on windows), but in
principal it seems a good idea (and is how it is done on Linux). This uses
symbolic links ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbolic_link ) which, in
windows i have to set up with a tool (winbolic). I have done this, but i
cant get it to work :-( . Everytime a new site is installed, we create a new
folder , and add a dummy site to this folder. Pointing the a records for the
domain to the site folder. Because i couldnt get the symbolic links working,
i added the core files (essentially the same as symbolic links) to each site
folder too,

/htdocs/core/typo3 core files
/htdocs/site1/dummy site + Symbolic Links to core folders, ( or with actual
core files )
/htdocs/site2/dummy site + Symbolic Links to core folders, (or with actual
core files )
/htdocs/site3/dummy site + Symbolic Links to core folders, (or with actual
core files )
/htdocs/site4/dummy site + Symbolic Links to core folders,( or with actual
core files)

Pros
Self contained sites,
seperate databases for each site
If symbolic links are used, very little space requred
If symbolic links are used,Easily update one installation of Typo3

Cons
Because i couldnt get the symbolic links working, i had to add core files to
each site, whihc bulks it out a little.
If symbolic links are NOT used, you would need to update every installation
of Typo3

Questions
Do these sites share the same memory space/fe configuration? (i suppose they
will if they are within the same server or VDS) (i dont know)
Therefore, refreshing the cache for a site would not create a massive load
on the server? again, im not sure, as much explanation as possible please
;-)

-----------------------------------------------------------------
General Questions
Which of the two methods do people use, and which is better for the load on
the server. Any comments and views are greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Jamie
